International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme - IB PYP

The IB PYP is for students aged 4 -12 and focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer both in the classroom and the world outside. It not only aims to develop inquiring students but also knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

The programme has a strong international dimension and draws on content from educational cultures around the world.  The IB PYP includes both individual subjects and transdisciplinary areas. There is a strong focus on developing skills of learning and encouraging students to become responsible members of their community.

The essential elements of the curriculum are as follows:

  • Knowledge - significant, relevant content
  • Concepts - powerful ideas that students explore and re-explore to develop in-depth understanding
  • Skills - capabilities that students need to demonstrate to succeed in a changing, challenging world
  • Attitudes - dispositions that are expressions of fundamental values, beliefs and feelings about learning, the environment and people
  • Action - demonstrations of deeper learning in responsible behaviour through responsible action

The transdisciplinary themes that organise the units of inquiry throughout the school year are:

  • Who we are
  • Where we are in space and time
  • How we express ourselves
  • How the world works
  • How we organise ourselves
  • Sharing the planet
