Middle Years Curriculum

The Westwood International School Middle Years Curriculum builds on the IB PYP and is for students from 12 - 14 years of age. The school is developing a discrete middle years curriculum that is inquiry based, authentic, and transdisciplinary. This curriculum will eventually extend through Years 8 - 11.

As with the IB PYP the essential elements of the curriculum will continue to be:

  • Knowledge - significant, relevant content
  • Concepts - powerful ideas that students explore and re-explore to develop in-depth understanding
  • Skills - capabilities that students need to demonstrate to succeed in a changing, challenging world
  • Attitudes - dispositions that are expressions of fundamental values, beliefs and feelings about learning, the environment and people
  • Action - demonstrations of deeper learning in responsible behaviour through responsible action

Students will identify and explore big questions that face them as human beings: moral, scientific, political, social, cultural, physical and artistic.  They will work with teams of teachers to ensure that the questions are covered in breadth and depth and that the different disciplines are drawn on to help them in their explorations.

Middle Years students will be members of Houses and Home Groups where they will be actively encouraged to build a shared school culture of participation, sharing, increasing responsibility and fun.

As the Westwood International School Middle Years curriculum leads into examination assessed courses such as the IGCSE and the International Baccalaureate Diploma.
