ESL (English as a Secondary Language)

Westwood International School is an English language medium institution. WIS offers language support for students whose first language is other than English in order that they may participate fully in all aspects of their school life.

ESL support in the Secondary School (Years 8-10) is provided on four levels to cater for the linguistic needs of students. Depending on his/her language competency, a student who is tested as requiring ESL support will be provided with the following levels of assistance:

1. Intensive (beginner) The school provides an intensive English programme of short-term duration. As well as providing specialised ESL tuition, it will enable a student to be introduced to the life of the school and to participate in non-language rich subjects. This level of support will carry with it an extra fee as it will involve the employment of a specialist ESL tutor.
2. Significant (lower intermediate/intermediate). A student will be provided with a modified English class and in-class support for Science, Humanities and Maths. The student does not take a foreign language.
3. Moderate & Mild (intermediate). A student will be provided with ESL support in mainstream English and other language-rich subjects. This support will be a mixture of in-class assistance or withdrawal depending on the needs of the student. The student does not take any foreign language.
